No Celebration, But Much Reflection
Posted by Rich Desoto on April 27th, 2007
Hehe. I was officially a year old in Second Life yesterday. How did I celebrate? I didn’t. I didn’t even log on. Interesting how certain landmarks in time can be embraced in so many different ways. Some people will mark these times with great revelry and circumstance. Others let them go by quietly, sometimes un-noticed. I tend to “recognize” them, but don’t necessarily make a huge deal about it. Save the occasional remark (or blog post in this instance).
I did want to recognize an interesting observation, though! Banana Stein and I are the same age in RL and we both opened our SL accounts the same day last year. Interesting! He is, however, much more aged in terms of his SLBuzz account. ;)
Gomem Desoto (heya brother) and I are also the same age in RL, but he predates me by a few days in Second Life.
Interestingly enough (to me, perhaps to no one else?) I had an SL account just after they first opened their metaversical existence. I remember logging on for the first time in my generic form and looking at a very plain, very blank “floor”. There was a central post there that many avatars were hovering near — all apparently discussing their newbie existences and asking each other “what do we do next?”
I walked over to a very large structure. It appeared to be a building of some type, but I saw no entrances or windows. It was just a large blackish/bluish building with some textures on it. Some were signs, some were photos. There was a media player there that looked like a very large juke-box. I don’t remember being able to get any music playing, though.
I walked for some time, but never found anything but the plain, very mundane flooring and an avatar standing lonely in the expanse.
Not being much of a “chat-room” fan at the time, I didn’t see much use or sense in it all. SL was, in my opinion, a chat room with a 3D avatar for enhancement. I didn’t log in again after that first experience.
Who knew then that the SL world would develop into such a diverse culture of builders, scripters, musicians, merchants, artists, dreamers, thinkers, social communities, dancers, and…
I can’t remember that first avatar login information or even my name then. Too bad. Would be cool to login and rez him up. I can imagine a wide-eyed wonder from the long-sleeping dude.

Well… happy rez-day Rich! Just prompted me to figure out mine. Wow, less than a week away!
I too had much the same thoughts regarding getting involved in SL. If I hadn’t met a group of great podcasters back when I first started exploring, there would be no way I’d still be in-world. It just goes to show you that as much as SL is a business mechanism or fantasy playground for some, it really IS about the relationships you forge. I know that without SL, the chances of me meeting you would have been dramatically lower. While I’m still working to find my niche in-world, I can still reflect on the great benefit I’ve gotten simply though those relationships. That alone makes me smile.

I think “rez-day” will end up in future dictionaries…

I remember when I first entered in world — I was beladona then too, but I don’t remember my last name. I flew about and kept getting stuck in odd places becuase my dial up was agonizingly slow. Back then a lifetime membershiop only cost $9.95 — and I thought it was too much. I went back to my asynchronous conferences and didn’t give SL another thought….

Happy Rez day, Rich. I am 3 days younger than you. One year in SL is like 5 in RL, I think.

Hey Baby … Happy Rez Day a few days late! Is missing wishing you a happy rez day a really bad thing, like missing your RL birthday or anniversary? Sigh . .. Well, I did throw you a kick ass birthday party in SL on your RL birthday . .. so I think I’m okay. If not, well . . .um … I’ll make it up to you later. (hmmm, wondering if that is TMI?) *blush*
Love you!!!
