Speedier IMs

I fixed a bug. Now sending in-world IMs, adding someone to the friends list, and sending email from profiles should be snappier.

Skiing in the nude

Posted by Mark Barrett on March 14th, 2007 (572 days ago)

Well that was not exactly what I had hoped for. So I’m on the Weather Island, which looks great. Extreme skiing sounds like fun, so I bought my set of utilities (boots, skiis and poles). I ski in RL so maybe this will be fun.

On top of the hill I run into Dharma Austin, who told me that she just gave it a whirl and found it quite hard actually.

My Rezdate

Posted by Mark Barrett on March 13th, 2007 (573 days ago)

It is hard to believe a year has passed already. It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s great to see Second Life grow and evolve. For as fun as 2006 was, I’m looking forward to an even more interesting 2007.

List of simulators is back up

Posted by Mark Barrett on January 30th, 2007 (615 days ago)

Big thanks to Torley Linden for pointing out that the SLStats Region Browser was down. Luckily this was a very short lived problem.

It looks like Linden Lab made some very minor changes to the Second Life web site, but enough to break the script SLStats uses to grab the list of simulators. A small adjustment and we’re back in business. Second Life currently has 6353 Simulators. Amazing growth.

Blogging from the site directly

Posted by Mark Barrett on December 31st, 2006 (645 days ago)

Someone brought to my attention that it might be desirable to be able to post blog entries from the slbuzz.com web site directly. Makes sense, of course, and so that’s what I’m working on. Should be ready to go in a few minutes.

The question now is just how crossposting should be handled in this case. I’ll have to mull over that for a bit. Any suggestions are welcome!

Messaging and Contacts

Posted by Mark Barrett on December 31st, 2006 (645 days ago)

I added messaging and the notion of contacts to to SLBuzz. You add anyone you want to your contact list, at some point I’ll probably add some access levels like Friend of Family or something like that. Hey, if it’s good enough for flickr, it’s good enough for slbuzz, right?
Another small update or three, and then it’s time for a refactoring cycle again. Or in plain english: rather than adding features, i’ll improve the stuff behind the scenes and fix bugs without introducing new end-user (that’s you) functionality.

Web-IM fixed

Posted by Mark Barrett on December 14th, 2006 (662 days ago)

One of the scripts didn’t respond. Not sure what happened there, maybe a sim restart left the script unresponsive. Unfortunately my side of the logic had a flaw that it wouldn’t let the message get past the ‘broken script’. Normally, when a message server is no longer available, it’s marked as deleted and another xml-rpc call to the next message server is placed. In this case, the error message didn’t trigger deletion, but the message server was also not marked as having been accessed. That caused the hangup. Anyway, all techno babble aside, everything’s good, and what was good is even better now.

XML-RPC issues! Web-IM down.

Posted by Mark Barrett on December 14th, 2006 (662 days ago)

There’s something fishy going on, I’m not quite sure it’s on my end. The Web IM feature on profiles (only visible if you’re logged in) isn’t functioning right now. Luckily that’s the only component that relies on XML-RPC. I’m getting timeout errors, and I believe this is happening since the last grid update. I’ll try to bang on it and see what falls off.
