What community means

Crossposted to SL Buzz from My Metaverse in the Making

In SL and also in other interactive communities, metaverse-versed or web-based, the word community itself seems to have such different and sometimes discording semantics that I cannot just let it float out there without trying to make sense of it. Usually it means at least a given community, and sometimes, if not often, subculture. I have seen the pejorative usage a bit too often in SL. Someone who is “into community” sometimes gets translated the ava-person is only into sex. Sorry, but I think there are several meanings. Community can mean the community at large and also, what strategy one has to make it one’s own and good for everyone. Tolerant, not criminal. There are rules and there’s freedom within the rules, like in any World out there, Meta or not.

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 23rd, 2007 (504 days ago)

Hi all! I am posting this because of people still coming to ask about how it’s done and I am trying to be patient …. Please forgive any eventual repetition, but I am just going to hand out the link here - not specifically to my bloggie part but to the general one @ blogs/ so folks will actually see that there’s a lot of biz buzz going on in here! :)

I am limiting this to land business for now :

Rezday astrology

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 23rd, 2007 (504 days ago)

Crossposted from My Metaverse in the Making

Now, file this under space oddities… I was just checking out SL resident friends’ rezdays (concept ripped here) as applied to Occidental astrology. Many residents I know well were born under Libra or Scorpio… September, October and thereabouts. Go figure:=) Or is there another astrology type for SL? Would have to factor in Pacific Time zone, and so forth. Anyway, my SL account birthday gives me Libra (October 18th, 2006). Mine rings true to this life I am living. Always pondering, yet aiming towards equanimity, artistic biz nice type… yet, give justice!!! - Here on Earth it was - still is - yes August 23rd. The first two people to wish me happy b-day were Savi Surya and Pombo Legion - resident friends - just couple minutes past midnight in Eastern time (and one had no clue about behind-screen time zone). WOOT thanks!!! Next up, rezday party. I ain’t kidding! Will also take all time zoning out of the equation. Landie biz took off nicely too… Here’s sending lots of stars your way. Have a great day everyone!

Your best kept business secret ...

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 10th, 2007 (517 days ago)

What’s essential in SL business skills according to you?

I have a whole list of focus, planning, holding realreal meetings, having a great business plan - but if I had to say just one thing I’d give this piece of advice:

Hunters.

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 9th, 2007 (517 days ago)

You know what this is about, right?

It says what it is - you know. You give a friend “can see me on the map” status and they do not have their SL-etiquette together. So you say, “You are welcome, just IM me first.”

AvaDate, test-driven for you!

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 8th, 2007 (518 days ago)

Now, if you give it one second and a half of thought, you will think “These writer people use all they can get as material for more logorrhea and other verbal spamming” and maybe so.

But I have to pimp AvaDate here. If you’re lost in the maze of avas and dating, Julianna Margetts and ButterflyKiss Ophelia certainly have their acts together on both rental business, management and … well, royally well done matchmaking… been there, done that and actually really got the t-shirt too (not that you’d catch me alive wearing it!)

More mystery shopping

Posted by Marigold Galland on August 8th, 2007 (519 days ago)

I went mystery shopping again last night on my non-crusade mission to several places and actually needed something (incidentally found a really cute Hello Kitty bag among skins that did not look suspicious at all at one business).

But at one place - usually one of my favorites for good artwork when too lazy to upload mine and insert it a frame - here comes the screamer yelling “This is scam” and all you can imagine, telling everybody around the names of the business owners. I started IMing the guy furiously so as to have the other shoppers make their own minds about the quality - I have never had a problem there. It turned out to be a non-issue. The person was silenced, heeded my advice, IMed the owner and got their money back for stuff that failed to materialize or just failed to be found. No reports filed to the best of my knowledge and calm fell at least on that person. Not so with other clients.

Maintenance Mondays...

Posted by Marigold Galland on July 31st, 2007 (527 days ago)

Just a little note to say I enjoyed my Maintenance Monday … buiding was good and everyone offline. At one point when the lindens were showing “loading…” I thought goodbye sweet world but then actually got to doing stuff… but I saw your posts Melissa and was also searching searching for someone for landscaping and then got into do it myself (too many trees now… :| ) But for business it is not good unless you still have something *small* to create.

On the official bloggie it was up earlier on that residents were wearing “I hate Maintenance Mondays| T-shirts. Well I don’t hate them, was actually thinking about loving them, until inventory items failed to materialize, previously there. Just for the buzz, who knows where to get one?

From MMORPGS to Metaverse

Posted by Marigold Galland on July 29th, 2007 (529 days ago)

Observational stand mode on: It is interesting to observe new residents or folks trying out SL just for fun. I am talking about gamer-gamer types trying to assimilate (sometimes it is just “From WoW to the World and back again, some like it and stay). I am not laughing at them actually, even when gamer types are trying to out-1337 older residents but observing. The usual questions are ” am just standing here so what now?” “Where is it happening?”

Yeah, it has not *that kind* of scripted events. Sure there is no *one goal*, but several - up to new residents to choose what they want…. Bet you know all of this already but just wanted to do my community buzz thing, as I do tend get to meet gamer types, more and more so, and try to orient them to some kind of activities they like.

Forever young (?)

Posted by Marigold Galland on July 27th, 2007 (531 days ago)

/me puts on her community combat boots and launches into a tirade: “It is all good and well with the fact that we are ageless on SL…” (and there you can see me coming with a BUT.) “But.”. I love the forever young thing, you meet souls when it comes to that.

… But what about the terrible kid sex skins? Can that be all right? I know I am not the only one thinking about it. Have seen that look at several stores. Twelve max. Not really age of consent, although it may be just play. Certainly these are only skins on an avatar, supposedly adult, although you might never know who is driving it. Is there a limit here, or is it just me being limited?
