There really should be a podcast “The War of the Podcasters” or a show entitled that really… All this stuff is really kinda making me nervous about continuing on with a podcast… For starters I’m an extremely shy person in real life, so why I attempted one in the first place is beyond me. Perhaps it’s because most of my friends are podcasters? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions… Meep.

My reason for going into SL was to see what other podcasters were doing, get ideas from them, invite them to send stories into my own as a welcome break from their own long formats, and build insane things that would give Dali and Magritte nightmares.
It was not for the purpose of finding new and interesting people to pick fights with or set against each other. I have Frisky and Nardo for that.
Whatever happens, do your podcast. The more voices out there, maybe it’s a cacophony at times, but now and then the chorus becomes clear.
And if you need any material or links from me, well, let me know. I’m sure there’s some in the back of the hard drive, gathering dust when it should be running around with scissors.

Best of luck at your decision. Personally, I wouldn’t let all the politics and positioning that seems to go around the podcasting community effect what you do as a podcaster. I usually try to stay out of all the junk as I often find it misguided and simply an extension of a lack of communication. As a whole, the podcasting community is absolutely amazing.
I podcast because I love doing it. If I had 3 listeners, yes… it would be discouraging, but I’d keep doing it because I LOVE doing it. Case in point, KCWeather has a small but loyal following, but I’ve done over 750 episodes to date. Looking Out The Window has a moderate following, but seems to get lost in the flood of music podcasts. Podsafe Christmas is a niche that steamrolled anything I had ever done before in podcasting as far as listeners are concerned. But all that is just gravy.
Here are some questions for you to ask yourself…
1. Why did you start your podcast to begin with?
2. What is your motivation to podcast now?
3. Have you enjoyed doing your podcast?
4. If you had twice as many listeners, would it be motivation to continue?
5. If you had HALF has many listeners, would you still produce your show?
6. Does RL suffer from your podcasting?
In the end, it really comes down to “do you have a passion for your show?”
Best of luck!

IMNSHO, podcasting is rather like blogging, YMMV
don’t let the currents in the existing community sweep you away — they are more in the nature of growing pains experienced by any active group

Wow, yes, bela… mileage may vary and often does. I like Ed’s comments, too. “Do you have a passion for your show?” If so, by all means, do it! I certainly appreciate the fact that podcast (new media or whatever catch phrase you want to call it these days) has room for everybody! It’s user generated content and the people that are interested will be there!

beladona’s right - this is just growing pains. don’t let it stop you from doing your thing. you owe no one anything, and you’ll find so many friends and great “mentors” and so on in the podcasting community.
there are no large groups of people that don’t have problems, conflicts, egos, misunderstandings, all of it. just do your best, ignore what you don’t like, and move on… and have fun!!
