Mid-Second Life Crisis

Posted by Ed Radio on February 26th, 2007

So, I’ve been in SL for 9 months now and find myself in an interesting position. In the last few months I’ve seen most of my friends either begin businesses in SL, add to their current businesses, purchase islands, become prolific builders and designers, etc. Meanwhile I’m sitting in-world trying to find my place. I have a piece of land I have no idea how to really utilize. I hesitate contacting friends at times for fear I’ll disturb them as they do actual work. All in all… wondering where I fit into the whole grand scheme of things.

I don’t have a GREAT deal of time to spend in-world, but still feel I need my place. I am going to roll out an interview with srv4u for the next Looking Out The Window. Does my future lie in that realm? Blending SL and podcasting more? I’ve enjoyed learning how to build too. Sigh… I’ll find my place, just need to figure out some direction, I suppose.

Wow! Someone else who feels like me!

I have been living my Second Life for over a year now, and I still do not really have a “direction” yet, either. So the good news is, you’re not alone. The bad news: what on Earth (or at lease this sim) are we supposed to do about it?

I am currently working on building my third - no, make that my fourth - house. I haven’t yet finished ANY of them, and I sometimes get discouraged. I do like to discover new places, but I think my favorite thing is meeting people. I LOVE to meet people. Maybe that’s why I spend so much time away from home where I could be working on a house to live in (and perhaps sell.)

I think maybe you are in the same boat, especially since you are a podcaster. That’s all about communicating with people. So if you don’t have a firm “meaning” to your second life, I think that’s okay. Second Life is just a place for me to do a few things I can’t necessarily do in my first life, like dance and look good at it. :-)

I’m just glad that unlike many married men in SL, you aren’t contemplating an SL affair. Sorry, I’m feeling especially cynical today.

Ed: Just enjoy yourself, friend. When and if it is meant to be that you have a mission in SL, it will present. We just dig having you around when we can see you!

but Ed, I thought your purpose was to show me the best camping places?

Seriously? I understand how you feel — so many people are into businesses or forming relationships or participating in group activities and they all bustle about so purposefully! Makes me feel like a very lazy person at times…

Ed, you are never disturbing me, at least. I think while many people may be doing stuff… almost everyone has time for an old friend. Just have fun, do whatever makes you happy, and you’ll find your way. But in the meantime, please please please talk to your friends!

  6. Sierra Corleone says:

Ed hun, just enjoy the fact that you don’t have to stress over anything in SL. Its fun to just have someplace to escape to when the “real world” wants to bring you down. Feel free to disturb me whenever I’m in world … who knows, maybe I’ll turn you on to a new game or you can roll a lucky chair or two with me!! *hugs*

  7. Tamara Kirshner says:

Ed, your way of brightening our days is very disturbing. Please cut it out! Stop being a great guy and making your friends smile IMMEDIATELY!

  8. Crap Mariner says:

    Never fear disturbing me.

How could I possibly be more disturbed? ;)

  9. Ed Radio says:

    @Tamara… I am ashamed…
