Whither Windlight?

Posted by Crap Mariner on November 15th, 2007

So, it’s out there in the wild again. I’ve seen the Torley snapshots and a few others have sent me snapshots to compare to my own to see the difference.

I, for one, have downloaded the First Look, but haven’t installed and run it yet. My desktop isn’t exactly a clunker, a 3.4gig hyperthreader with 2gb and 256 pci-x video card, but it’s not exactly a liquid-cooled monster, either.

But many of you have installed it. And run it.

Thoughts on visual impact? Stability? Good for day-to-day use, or only for marketing materials?

Convince me that I need to double-click setup and dive in or delete the icon and hide in the corner as the house burns down around me.

For taking huge pics of the outdoors, windlight is FABULOUS.

For every day hanging out…you really don’t need it. I’d suggest installing it just to see how you like it. I love looking at the view from my deck, but day to day, i stick with what i already have.

It is an enormous CPU hog. Prohibitively so, in fact. And if you tone down the settings to accommodate for that, then your draw distance is severely shortened and everything gets very dark. And it still hogs up CPU time.

Honestly, it’s lovely. But SL is already very hard on machines making it difficult for a large range of people to use. Introducing more advanced technology which will require more robust machines, will only cut out more of the user base. There are a whole multitude of very obvious reasons why that simply isn’t smart. I hope LL wises up on this one.

I went ahead and installed it, but it’s solely for high-quality photoshoots, profile pics.
